Planning Note

Water is clearly a more important emergency planning consideration than food. One gallon per person per day for three days is the MINIMUM; a two week supply is recommended. Remember that bottled water is considered a food product, not drinking water, and thus bottled water products come under FDA regulation, not EPA which regulates drinking water and you should understand what that means before you store water. Some bottled water is just untreated tap water. Some manufacturers claim bottled water has a long shelf life but many experts recommend that bottled water should be kept for no longer than six months. The water we sell (below) is US Coast Guard, Department of Transportation Canada, and European Community approved with an authentic 5 year shelf life; no bottled water can make that claim.

Plan to store enough supplies to last everyone in your household for at least three days.

Meals, Ready-to-Eat ( MRE)

One case of 12 complete MRE meals. Six different menus per case. Each item in the meal (the entree, fruit, etc.) is sealed in its own foil pouch, the entree and side pouches are boxed, and each complete meal is then individually sealed in a rugged, clear plastic package as shown.

MRE foil pouches have an easy-open tear notch. The only tool you need for an MRE is the spoon that comes with each meal. Truly ready-to-eat; no heating or cooking required but can be warmed simply by immersing the pouch in hot water.

N-95 Respirator

This is a high quality, 3-panel N-95 respirator, manufactured by 3M, a world leader in respiratory protection. Advanced electrically-charged microfibers make breathing easy and cool because particles cling to the charged fibers without blocking airflow. This is not the N-95 dust-type mask that is found in stores. NIOSH 42 CFR 84 approved.

Each mask is folded flat and factory sealed its own plastic bag so it will stay clean until you are ready to use it. Does not require fit testing since the unique design adapts to face and seals easily. Weighs less than an ounce. One size.

An N-95 mask provides efficient protection against pathogens, influenza-type viruses, diseases like TB, and airborne particulates. It is useful in situations where you are concerned about inhaling biological contaminants below 1 micron, like influenza and SARS, and particles like anthrax spores. Typical environments for use include mail rooms, hospitals, airplanes, and public places where you may come in contact with infected persons. Xcaper Goggle

Emergency preparedness guides say to keep a manual can opener with your emergency supplies (not just somewhere in a kitchen drawer). This is a US military surplus can opener, brand new, that soldiers would use to open C-Rations. Stamped U.S. or MIL-J-0837, measures 3/4"x1 1/2" and has a small hole (look above the thumb in the photo) to attach to a ring, backpack, etc.

Utility Shut Off 4-in-1 Emergency Tool

OK, so all the emergency guidance you have read says you should be prepared to shut off the gas and water. Ever looked at your gas shut off valve? You need a big wrench with a long handle to close that valve. Water shut offs are often below ground and you need a different big wrench to reach far down in a narrow space just to get to that valve. Good luck trying to close those valves with a standard crescent or adjustable wrench!

This tool was designed for homeowners and tested by professional firefighters to fit the gas shut off valve and the water shut off valve.  It was also designed to pry open jammed doors and dig through debris. What are you going to sleep on if you have to evacuate or shelter in place in the office? Ever spent the night in a stadium or an airport?  Imagine what it would be like to evacuate or live for a few days in a public building or the basement. This is an ideal emergency bed. Tube Tent

Basic, no frills, emergency shelter. Waterproof; 72" x 96" with space for two adults; weighs 15 oz.

This is a rudimentary, inexpensive shelter to keep on hand "just in case." It is not a good choice for camping.

Tarp, 5' x 7'

Lightweight blue nylon tarp, always useful in emergencies, particularly to protect gear and supplies from weather or to cover broken windows, holes in the roof, etc. Grommets at corners and about every 3' with polyester rope inside a completely hemmed perimeter.

Multi-Function Warmer

Potassium Iodide (KIO3)

We stock potassium iodide (iodate) specifically for those who are concerned about being in a potential "dirty nuke" area or may be at risk of exposure to radiation. Each factory sealed bottle contains 200 tablets, 85mg each. Check the manufacturer's website.

This is probably the least useful preparedness item.  There is no pill that will protect you from radiation or its effects in a "dirty nuke" or larger scale nuclear incident. Children may, in theory, have some use for KI03 to block radiation accumulation in the thyroid but it is of limited or no use to adults.  None of us at COPE-USA has KI03 in our preparedness kits.  Buy more water for your emergency supplies instead of KI03.
